Winter Saltwater Fishing Florida

hunting and fishing

The winter months of Florida don't feature large, impressive fish schools but there are still plenty opportunities for saltwater fishing. Although cold weather can force snook and other gamefish to move upstream into rivers, canals, and creeks due to the cold, the increased numbers of these fish can lead to concentrations. Brackish rivers are often home to freshwater species like catfish and largemouth basses, so this migration may occur.

Red snapper

Red snapper can be a fantastic choice for winter saltwater fishing. Red snapper only comes into season at certain times during the year. These times are the weekends leading to Memorial Day. They will be over by September 7th 2021. To maximize your chances of catching a nice fish, consider one of the following tactics. Research is key to catching a fish.

Cobia

Fishing for Cobia is a great winter trip for saltwater fishing. Cobia is a predatory and strong fish. They eat mainly crustaceans but will also eat other fish. The larger pelagic species prey on young cobia. They migrate seasonally throughout the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean. Cobia from the northeastern Gulf of Mexico migrate south during winter to spend the winter in the Florida Keys. You don't need a federal permit to catch cobia; just use authorized gear including automatic reels, bandit gear, handlines, rod and reels, and pelagic longlines.

Sheepshead

Sheepshead are a popular catch in coastal Atlantic waters, particularly in the Gulf of Mexico. They are also common to see fishing for on grass flats. It is easily identifiable on the water by its distinctive vertical black-white stripes. Sheepsheads can live at different depths from backwaters to offshore coral reefs. Florida's winter brings cold fronts, and the fish will migrate inshore to feed.

Barracuda

Although the Florida Keys are known for their bones, there are many other species that can be caught while you're saltwater fishing in Florida. Although Barracuda used to be a popular winter flats species, they are now almost impossible to catch. The Lower Keys Guides Association launched the Save the Barracuda campaign. The group has urged Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commissions to implement harvest regulations to safeguard these endangered fish. Two public meetings were held by the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission. A draft rule is expected to be issued this fall.

Pompano fish

The early season coldfront pushed the pompano south. You can now catch them year round. You can still catch trout and redfish, but you can also fish for pompano. Delicious meals will be your reward if you are willing to work hard. Florida Pompano winter saltwater fishing with Pompano fish

Redfish

While there are many ways to catch redfish in winter, the best method is to fish from mangroves. Redfish prefer cooler waters to eat as they can become overheated in warmer water in the summer. To catch redfish, you can send a dead bait up to the mangrove root. Redfish will love the salty flavor of the bait and will root for it until it reaches their mouths.

Blackfin tuna

Blackfin tuna, a small species of fish that can be found on the continental shelves from the Carolinas to Brazil, is a small fish. Although their current stocks are healthy, global warming may be extending their range north. Florida's Fish and Wildlife Commission has recently set new daily and weekly catch limits for blackfin, ten per person and two per boat. Blackfins can also be found anywhere in Florida's oceans, unlike skipjacks.
